Proposed California Bill Would Punish Registered Voters Who Fail To Vote

(Sacramento, CA)  — A bill proposed in California wants to punish registered voters who don’t go to the polls.  AB2070, authored by Democratic Assemblyman Marc Levine, would require every California resident to participate in every election in their community.  The bill does not specify a punishment for failing to vote, instead, leaving that up to the California Secretary of State. Those who insist on not voting, would be required to submit a blank or partial ballot.  Chairman of the Marin County Republican Central Committee says the bill is a slippery slope, adding lawmakers can’t force people to do something unless they’re controlling the outcome of what they do.
