Underneath the roar erupting from Sun Devil Stadium yesterday as the Territorial Cup was reclaimed from the Arizona Wildcats, a reckless crime was committed as Tempe students were distracted.
Students were alerted via ASU’s Emergency texting service to stay clear of Rural and Apache area following a drive-by shooting that occurred at around 3:45 p.m. The text was evidently written quickly, ridden with typos and abbreviations in an attempt to keep students safe.
On a streak of good fortune, no one was injured and Tempe could celebrate their victory without suffering the tragic loss of any of their classmates. The area was cleared shortly after.
In the past years college students nationwide have learned that at any moment, a gun can be pulled on their campus and the difference between life and death can be mere minutes… seconds.
Brittany Zawacki, a student living in apartments inches away from where the incident took place said she remembers leaving the nearby Dutch Bros at 3:42. She was in the elevator of her complex by 3:48 but miraculously made it home safely.
“I can’t believe I missed it… It had to have been by a minute,” she said. “It makes me feel unsafe in the area. Especially because it wasn’t aimed at anyone in particular.”
Although the incident occurred during one of the hottest rivalries in the west, students do not seem to be under the impression that the crime could be related to football. But according to Tempe Police, little is information has been obtained at this time, and has asked anyone who could have any information on the incident to call 480-350-8311.
Michael Pooley and Molly Enright of Tempe Police Department Media Relations were contacted but did not respond for comment.
